    Well, if MLB did decide to allow their players to compete, they would be joining the NHL and the NBA, who already allow their players to do that.

    This is true. MLB allows players from it’s minor league teams to participate but not those on the major league 25-man roster. The timing of the Olympics is during the MLB playoff hunt so it is understandable that there would be concerns.

    I also think that players with incentive clauses may choose finances over patriotism even if they were allowed to participate.

    Yeah, that’s definitely a possibility. Especially since it’s during the lead-up to the playoffs I can see why teams would be leery about doing that. The players that could make a difference at the olympics (i.e. the ones the IOC is whining about not having) are the same players that the teams need to make the playoffs.
