Nihon on the Net
In Ian Fleming’s footsteps in Tokyo a modern writer attempts to recreate a trip made to Tokyo in 1959 by the creator of James Bond.
Check out this video, from CNN, about Tokyo’s lost and found. Tokyo has one of the lowest urban crime rates in the world and the Japanese are raised to return what is not theirs. As a result the lost and found collects millions of items each year and at any given time they are holding 130,000 umbrellas waiting to be claimed by their rightful owners. Thanks to Japundit for the heads up on this one.
Metropolis Magazine, Japan’s No.1 English Magazine, has created a Best of Tokyo listing that was voted on by it’s readers. Everything from the best brunch to the best pub or the best locations to buy English language books is covered on the list.
The Japan Times reports that 10% of Japan’s population lives in Tokyo. There has been a lot of talk lately about Japan’s aging population and all 47 prefectures (states/provinces) reported an increase in residents over 65. Only Tokyo saw an increase in those 14 and younger. It’s also interesting that, for the first time since they began compiling data in 1950, there were more deaths than births in Japan.
