Celebrate Fathers Day at the Sanno Matsuri

by Shane on June 12th, 2008

The Sanno Matsuri (Festival) will be held over Father’s Day weekend, June 13th - 15th, at the Hie Jinja Shrine in central Tokyo. The Hie Jinja Shrine is enshrines it’s namesake, the deity Oyamakui-no-kami, the god of Mount Hie in Shiga prefecture, more commonly known as Hie-no-kami. It was constructed in 1478 within the confines of the Imperial Palace and was moved to its present location in 1607. The shrine was destroyed by fire twice, once in 1659 and again in 1945, and was rebuilt in 1958.

The shrine is situated on a hill in Akasaka and is accessed by climbing through the dramatic series of torii (gates) pictured below.image
